NATIONAL:

1. J& K Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 & J& K Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2023

Why in news - Lok Sabha passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

Key Points -

• The Reorganization Bill increases the total number of seats in J&K Assembly from 107 to 114, with reservation of nine seats for Scheduled Tribes for the first time. The increase is based on the report of the Delimitation Commission.

• Earlier there were 37 seats in Jammu which have now become 43, there were 46 seats in Kashmir earlier which have now become 47 and 24 seats have been kept reserved for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir

• It also empowers the Lieutenant-Governor to nominate three members in the Assembly - two members from the Kashmiri migrant community including one woman, and the third member being a representative of people from PoK who took refuge in India following the wars with Pakistan in 1947, 1965 and 1971.

• The J&K Reservation Bill seeks to replace the term “weak and underprivileged classes (social castes)“ in the J&K Reservation Act, 2004 to “other backward classes” as declared by the Union Territory.

2. Chief Minister of Telangana

Why in news - Congress leader A Revanth Reddy was sworn-in as Chief Minister of Telangana in Hyderabad

Key Points -

• Revanth Reddy becomes the first Congress chief minister of Telangana and the second chief minister of the state created in 2014 following the bifurcation of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh

• Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan administer the oath of office and secrecy to Revanth Reddy and a few ministers.

• Congress won 64 seats by leaving the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi party with 39 seats and forming its first government in the state.

1. Mount Ulawun

Why in news - India announces 1 million dollars immediate relief assistance to Papua New Guinea after volcanic eruption of Mount Ulawun.

Key Points -

• Ulawun, the South Pacific nation's most active volcano, spewed smoke up to 15km (9.3 miles) in the air on November 20, the country's Geohazards Management Division said, in its first significant blow-up in years.

ART & CULTURE:

1. Garba of Gujarat

Why in news - Garba Of Gujarat’ Declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

Key Points -

• Garba of Gujarat' has been inscribed in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity by UNESCO, under the provisions of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage during the 18th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage from 5th -9th December, 2023 in Kasane, Botswana.

• The popular dance form is the 15th cultural item from India to make it to the UNESCO list. Kolkata’s Durga Puja was the last one added two years ago.

About UNESCO:

• It was founded in 1945 as the successor to the League of Nations’ International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation

• It has 193 member states and 11 associate members, as well as partners in the non-governmental, intergovernmental, and private sector.

• Headquartered at the World Heritage Centre in Paris

• India has been a founder member of UNESCO, having ratified UNESCO’s Constitution on 4th November, 1946, while still under colonial rule.

1. Colombo Security Conclave

Why in news - NSA Ajit Doval arrives in Mauritius to participate in Colombo Security Conclave

Key Points -

• The Conclave comprises of India, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and the Maldives.

• It aims to work on key areas of cooperation such as maritime security; countering terrorism; combating trafficking and cyber security; and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

Why in news - Armed Forces Flag Day or Flag Day in India is celebrated every year on 7 December.

Key Points -

• Armed Forces Flag Day or Flag Day in India is celebrated every year on 7 December since 1949 to pay tribute to martyrs in Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, and other defence forces who lost their precious lives while serving the country.

• On August 28, 1949, the Ministry of Defence declared that December 7 would be commemorated as Armed Forces Flag Day, a day dedicated to honoring the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who serve the nation.

1. Men's Volleyball Club World Championship

Why in news - FIVB ( Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) Men's Volleyball Club World Championship 2023 will commence at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru.

Key Points -

• This is the first time that the prestigious tournament will be held in India.

• The five-day tournament will see six teams compete for the top honours.

• Prime Volleyball League Season 2 champions, Ahmedabad Defenders, will become the first Indian team to feature in the competition.

2. IBA Junior World Boxing Championship

Why in news - India Bagged 17 Medals at Junior World Boxing Championships, 2023

Key Points -

• The IBA Junior World Boxing Championships 2023 were held in Yerevan, Armenia from 23 November to 4 December 2023.

• The Indian contingent won a total of 17 medals including three gold, nine silver and five bronze medals at the IBA Junior World Boxing Championships.

• India's young boxers Payal (48 kg), Nisha (52 kg) and Akanksha (70 kg) performed brilliantly and won gold medals.

1. Resma Prasad

Why in news - Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has nominated transgender activist Reshma Prasad as a senate member of the Patna University (PU) for three years.

Key Points -

• Prasad has become the first transgender person who has been nominated as a senate member of a university in the country.

• She is also a member of the National Council for Transgender Community and role model for other transgender.
