NATIONAL:

1. General Naravane’s China Map

Why in news – Recently, General Manoj Naravane (Retd) has shared a map of China that is much smaller than claimed by China.

Key Points –

• It shows the territories that were captured by China.

• On the western side, it shows Tibet and East Turkestan (former independent states) which acted as a buffer between India and China.

• It also shows Chinese-occupied south Mongolia, Yunnan, Manchuria, and the Chinese-occupied India's Ladakh.

• Currently, India shares 3488 km of border with China (J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh).

2. Nipah Virus Outbreak

Why in news - Kerala Health Department has issued an alert for Kannur, Wayanad, and Malappuram after 2 Nipah deaths (Kozhikode).

Key Points –

• Containment zones were declared under section (4) of the Kerala Epidemic Decease Control Ordinance 2020.

• National Institute of Virology (NIV) is located in Pune.

About Nipah Virus –

• Animal host - fruit bat (mammal).

• Infection can cause a mild to severe disease e.g., swelling in the brain (encephalitis), and can lead to death.

• As per World Health Organization (WHO), 40% - 75% of the cases can lead to death.

• Fatality rate in the 2018 outbreak in Kozhikode was well over 90%.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. Putin-Kim Summit

Why in news – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on September 13. 2023.

Key Points –

• Meeting place - Vostochny Cosmodrome (far eastern Amur region, Russia).

• Vostochny Cosmodrome is a major satellite launch facility (spaceport).

1. 14th World Spice Congress

Why in news – Mumbai will host the 14th World Spice Congress (WSC) edition on September 15-17, 2023.

Key Points –

• Theme - VISION 2030: S-P-I-C-E-S.

• S-P-I-C-E-S - Sustainability, productivity, innovation, collaboration, excellence, and safety.

• Spices Board (HQ - Kochi) comes under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

• India is considered the ‘spice bowl’ of the world.

2. 1st Global Symposium on Farmers' Rights

Why in news – Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the 1st Global Symposium on Farmers' Rights in New Delhi on September 12, 2023.

Key Points –

• Hosted by - Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

• Organised by - International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Rome) of FAO.

• India has only 2.4% of the world's land area but accounts for 7-8% of all recorded species of plants and animals.

3. Ketagalan Forum 2023

Why in news – India’s 3 former service chiefs held a closed-door meet in Taiwan at Ketagalan Forum.

• Ketagalan Forum is a crucial security dialogue seminar on Indo-Pacific organized by the Taiwan foreign ministry.

• India follows the ‘One China policy’ vis-a-vis Taiwan and does not have full diplomatic ties with Taipei.

4. 19th Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting (HACGAM)

Why in news – Indian Coast Guard participated in the 19th HACGAM in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Key Points –

• A four-member ICG delegation led by DG Rakesh Pal, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard participated.

• HACGAM has 23 members of Coast Guard Agencies and 02 associate members.

• It is an offshoot of the Japanese initiative to promote cooperation amongst regional Coast Guards, after the capture of the hijacked vessel MV Alondra Rainbow by the Indian Coast Guard in Nov 1999.

1. NASA’s MOXIE Mission

Why in news – NASA’s Oxygen-Generating Experiment MOXIE completes Mars mission.

Key Points –

• MOXIE - Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment.

• MOXIE has generated oxygen for the 16th and final time aboard NASA’s Perseverance rover.

• It could help supply breathable air or rocket propellant to future astronauts.

• Since the Perseverance rover landed on Mars in 2021, MOXIE has generated a total of 122 grams of oxygen.

Why in news – It is celebrated on September 14.

Key Points –

• Hindi written in the Devanagari script was adopted as the official language of India on September 14, 1949.

• The Hindi Sahitya Sammelan was established May 1, 1910.

• Bihar Hindi Sahitya Sammelan (Hq - Patna) was established in Muzaffarpur on October 19, 1919.

• World Hindi Day is celebrated on January 10 to honor the inception of the World Hindi Conference.

1. FIBA Basketball World Cup

Why in news – Germany beat Serbia to win the first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup.

• Venue - Manila, the Philippines.

• Germany became the first team to win a FIBA World Cup crown in their final debut since Spain in 2006.

1. Mob Lynching Victim Compensation Scheme

Why in news – Madhya Pradesh approved the Mob Lynching Victim Compensation Scheme.

Key Points –

• It aims to provide relief and resettlement to victims and their dependents in the state.

• Compensation - Rs 10 lakh (in case of death) and Rs 4-6 lakh (injured victims).

Value Addition –

• Tehseen S Poonawalla case (2018) – The Supreme court had directed state governments to prepare a lynching/mob violence victim compensation scheme.

BIHAR:

1. Bihar Rajya Fasal Sahayata Yojana

Why in news – Bihar is the 1st state to launch its own crop insurance scheme for its farmers.

Key Points –

• It was launched in the Kharif season in Bihar in 2018.

• It provides relief to farmers in the event of crop failure due to adverse weather.

Benefits –

(a) Crop loss of up to 20% - Rs 7500 per hectare.

(b) Crop loss of more than 20% - Rs 10000 per hectare.

• Eligibility - Farmers included in the Ryot and non-ryot and partially ryot and non-ryot category.

• Under - Cooperative Department, Govt of Bihar.

2. Honore to Farmers

Why in news – On September 12, 2023, President Draupadi Murmu honored 4 farmers and 2 farmer groups from Bihar

Key Points –

4 Farmers (Rs 1 lakh each) –

(a) Arjun Mandal (Jamui) - for preserving the cultivation of medicinal plants.

(b) Satyadev Singh (Munger) - for preserving the varieties of gram and titi.

(c) Dilip Kumar Singh (Rohtas) - for preserving the varieties of brinjal, tomato, bitter gourd and white varieties of coriander.

(d) Arjun Singh (Rohtas) - for preserving rice, turmeric and gourd.

2 farmer groups (Prize - Rs 10 lakh each)–

(a) Litchi Farmer Producer Group

(b) Bhagalpur Katarni Rice Producer Group.

• They were awarded at the 1st Global Symposium on Farmers' Rights in New Delhi on September 12, 2023.

Why in news – Bihar CM Nitish Kumar contributed Rs 5 Crore for Himachal Pradesh flood relief.
