1. “Human embryo” in Lab

Why in news – Israeli scientists have successfully grown a “human embryo” in the lab without using an egg or sperm.

Key Points –

• They used a mix of stem cells that were able to spontaneously assemble into an embryo-like structure.

Aim –

(a) Studying the initial stages may help understand genetic and inherited diseases better.

(b) Improving success rates of in vitro fertilization.

• Lab-grown embryos are not allowed to be used to get pregnant. It is destroyed after studying the first 14 days.

3. Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan

Why in news – A processing-cum-disposal plant for integrated solid waste management will be set up at Ramachak Bairiya, Patna.

Key Points –

• It will have different plants for separation of waste, production of biogas, waste to energy, compost plant, along with provision for sanitary landfill.

• Apart from recycling the waste, 15 MW electricity will also be generated daily.

• It will be the first of its kind integrated plant in the state.

• It will be built in an area of 86 acres at the cost of Rs 400 crores.

• The project will cover 12 urban local bodies under Patna metropolitan area.
