1. Leadership Programme in Science & Technology (LEADS)

Why in news – National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG) and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) launched the ‘NCGG – INSA LEADS.

Key Points –

• Aim - To realize India@ 2047 for scientific and technological advancements during Amrit Kaal.

• LEADS program aims to drive transformative changes, promote innovation, and establish India as a leader in science-led development in the world.

• NCGG was set up in 2014 under M/o Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions to deal with governance issues from local, state to national levels, across all sectors.

• Indian National Science Academy (INSA) was established to foster excellence in science and a mentor for Indian science.

About Clean Energy Ministerial (2009) –

• CEM’s Global Lighting Challenge campaign achieved a global collective target of 10 billion LEDs globally.

About Mission Innovation (MI) –

• Aim - to accelerate the Clean Energy revolution and progress towards the Paris Agreement goals and pathways to Net Zero.

• 1st phase (2015-2020) was announced at COP21 on November 30, 2015.

• Mission Innovation (MI2.0) (June 2, 2021) focus is on the decade of action (2021-2030) and the emphasis is to scale up the deployment of innovative clean energy technology.

1. World Milk Day 2023

Why in news – It is observed annually on June 1 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Key Points –

• Theme - Enjoy Dairy

• Milk is called complete food because it contains all essential nutrients except iron, including carbs, proteins, fats, and vitamins.

Value Addition –

• India - Highest milk producer (Rank 1, 24% of global milk production).

• Milk Producing States in India - Rajasthan (15.05%), Uttar Pradesh (14.93%), Madhya Pradesh (8.6%), Gujarat (7.56%) and Andhra Pradesh (6.97%).

• Pure cow milk is chock full of amino acids, beneficial enzymes, and fatty acids.

(c) Healthy adults - 600 mg/day

2. World No Tobacco Day 2023

Why in news – Every year, it is marked on May 31.

Key Points –

• Theme - “Grow food, not tobacco”.

• Aim - to raise awareness about alternative crop production for tobacco farmers and encourage them to grow nutritious crops.

• Commonly known as vapes.

• Contain nicotine which when heated produces an aerosol.

• Linked to respiratory and cardiovascular problems.

• Banned in India.

2. Praveen Kumar Srivastava

Why in news – Praveen Kumar Srivastava was sworn in as the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) by President Draupadi Murmu.

• Central Vigilance Commissioner and the Vigilance Commissioners are appointed by the President of India.

About Central Vigilance Commission –

• Set up - February 1964, on the recommendations of the Committee on Prevention of Corruption, headed by Shri K. Santhanam.

• Apex vigilance institution, free of control from any executive authority. (i.e., not controlled by any Ministry or Department. Only responsible to the Parliament).

• Composition - A Central Vigilance Commissioner and not more than two Vigilance Commissioners.

• Tenure - Hold office for a term of 4 years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

• Vineet Narain case (1997) - The CVC be given statutory status and be entrusted with the responsibility to supervise the work of the CBI ensuring its efficiency and impartiality.

• Statutory body - Central Vigilance Commission act 2003.
