1. International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

Why in news – India has won the IEC vice presidency and Strategic Management Board (SMB) chair for the 2023-25 term.

Key Points –

• Vimal Mahendru would be the IEC Vice President representing India.

• IEC is an international standard-setting body that publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.

• Its general meeting was held recently in San Francisco, US.

2. Republic Day Chief Guest

Why in news – Egypt President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi would be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in January 2023.

Key Points –

• This is the first time that the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt would be the chief guest.

• Also, Egypt has been invited as a ‘guest country’ during India’s presidency of the G20 in 2022-23.

Why in news – The railways aims at becoming a major exporter of Vande Bharat trains by 2025-26.

• It is annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR).

• It is being conducted at Air Force Station Agra.

Why in news – The European Space Agency named world’s first ‘parastronaut’ to work in space.

Key Points –

• Parastronaut name - John McFall, former British Paralympic sprinter.

• McFall won the 100-metres Bronze Medal at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008.

2. Russia as a State Sponsor of Terrorism

Why in news – The European Parliament designated Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Key Points –

• In the EU, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland have so far designated Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

• The U.S. State Department currently names four countries – Cuba, North Korea, Iran and Syria – as state sponsors of terrorism.

Why in news – The UN Human Rights Council voted to launch an independent investigation into Iran's deadly repression of protests.

• The 35th special session was held following an official request submitted by Germany and Iceland.

1. Ganga Jal Aapurti Yojana

Why in news – Hon’ CM Nitish Kumar inaugurated the the Gangajal Aapurti Yojana at Rajgir on Nov 28, 2022.

• The project was initiated under the Jal Jeevan Hariyali mission.

• It is dedicated to Rajgir, Gaya, and Bodh Gaya (Buddhist circuits).

• Project cost – Rs 4475.

• It has two objectives –

• To conserve floodwater, preventing wastage

• To transform this precious resource into safe, drinkable water.

• This floodwater would be lifted through pumps at Hathidah and transported through a 151 km pipeline to 3 enormous reservoirs in Rajgir, Tetar, and Gaya.

• Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) has executed the entire first phase of the project.

• It is also Bihar's first and largest drinking water programme.
