1. India's Top Oil Supplier

Why in news – As per Vortexa, Russia has emerged as the top oil supplier to India in October 2022.

Key Points –

• Russia now supplies almost 22% of India's total crude imports (0.2% on March 31, 2022).

• Share of other countries - Iraq (20.5%) and Saudi Arabia (16%).

• G7 countries plans to cap the price of oil purchased from Russia to limit Moscow's revenue.

• Vortexa is an energy cargo tracker and energy intelligence firm.

2. Shyam Saran Negi

Why in news – India’s first voter Shyam Saran Negi died at his native village in Kalpa in Kinnaur district (HP).

Key Points –

• He was the Election Commission of India’s brand ambassador.

• He has also been made a state election icon in 2014.

• Recently, he exercised his right to franchise for the 34th time for the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections.

1. Indian Black Honey Bee

Why in news – New honey bee species discovered in India (Western Ghats) after more than 200 years.

Key Points –

• Apis karinjodian - New species of Indian black honey bee.

• Spread - Western Ghats covering the States of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu.

• IUCN - Near threatened in Kerala.

• The last honey bee found in India in 1798 by Fabricius was Apis indica.

• Radio-Medial Index - New measure for species discrimination in honey bees.

1. Global Climate Report

Why in news - The report was published recently by World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Key Points –

• Global mean temperatures (2022) - About 1.150 C higher than pre-industrial times (average for the period 1850-1900).

• 2022 is likely to end up being the 5th or 6th warmest year on record (since 1850).

• Warmest year on record so far – 2016 (about 1.280 C higher than pre-industrial times).

• 3 main greenhouse gases - Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and Nitrous oxide (NO2).

• In Glasgow (COP26) - Countries had pledged to cut global methane emissions by at least 30% by the year 2030.

IMPORTANT DAYS:

1. The International Day for Biosphere Reserves (BR)

Why in news - First “International Day for Biosphere Reserves” was celebrated on Nov 3, 2022.

Key Points –

• It was announced by UNESCO at the 41st session of its general assembly in 2021.

• BR is an international designation by UNESCO for representative parts of natural and cultural landscapes.

• BR are nominated by national governments and remain under sovereign jurisdiction.

2. World Tsunami Awareness Day

Why in news – It is observed every year on November 5.

Key Points –

• Theme 2022 - “Early Warning and Early Action Before Every Tsunami.”

• It is organized by UN Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

1. India Chem 2022

Why in news - 12th International Exhibition and Conference India Chem 2022 was inaugurated in New Delhi.

Key Points –

• Theme for 2022 - “Vision 2030: Chemicals and Petrochemicals Build India”.

• India is the 4th largest producer of agrochemicals after the United States, Japan and China.

• India is the 6th largest producer of chemicals in the world.

• A 2034 vision for the chemicals and petrochemicals sector has been set up by the government to explore opportunities to improve domestic production.

2. 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD)

Why in news - Guyana President Mohamed Irfaan Ali would be the chief guest at the 17th PBD convention.

Key Points –

• It would be held from Jan 8-10, 2023 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

• Australian MP Zaneta Mascarenhas would be the guest of honour at the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

Why in news - Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) named Subhrakant Panda as its next president.

• He would succeed Sanjiv Mehta at the conclusion of the 95th AGM (Dec 16-17, 2022).

• He is currently serving as the senior vice president of FICCI.

Why in news – He has been elected as the new President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

• Amur falcons are the world’s longest-traveling raptor.

• It breeds in south-eastern Siberia and Northern China before migrating in large flocks across India and over the Arabian Sea to winter in Southern Africa.
