1. PARAKH

Why in news - Government proposed a new regulator “PARAKH” for ‘uniformity’ in all board exams.

Key Points –

• PARAKH full form - Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development.

• PARAKH would hold periodic learning outcome tests like the National Achievement Survey (NAS).

• It would act as a constituent unit of the NCERT.

• PARAKH is also part of the NEP proposal.

2. Competitiveness Roadmap for India@100

Why in news - The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) released the Competitiveness Roadmap for India@100.

Key Points –

• The roadmap is a part of the India Competitiveness Initiative.

• It is a collaborative endeavour between the EAC-PM and The Institute for Competitiveness.

• It is developed by Amit Kapoor.

• It guides India to become a developed country by 2047 based on the ‘4 S’ principles –

A. ‘Social progress’

B. To be ‘shared’ across all regions

C. Environmentally ‘sustainable’

D. ‘Solid’ in the face of external shocks.

3. Queen of the Netherland visited India

Why in news - Queen Maxima of the Netherlands called on President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Aug 29, 2022.

Key Points –

• Former President Ram Nath Kovind visited the Netherland in April 2022.

• The “Strategic Partnership on Water” was launched during the India - Netherlands Virtual Summit in April 2021.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. Mikhail Gorbachev

Why in news - Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader who brought the Cold War to a peaceful end, has died aged 91.

Key Points –

• He was the last President of the Soviet Union (March 1985-December 25, 1991).

• He succeeded Konstantin Chernenko as general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU)

• He helped take down the long-standing Iron Curtain in Berlin (Nov 1989).

• In 1990, Mr Gorbachev received the Nobel Peace Prize for his "leading role in the peace process" in Europe.

• He began “glasnost” (openness) and “perestroika” (restructuring) to end Russia's economic and political crisis.

2. Anti-Radiation Pills

Why in news - EU has decided to supply 5.5 million anti-radiation pills to be distributed among Ukrainians.

Key Points –

• It is because of fears of a nuclear disaster at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia power plant due to Russian Shelling.

About the pills –

• Potassium iodide (KI) tablets provide some protection in cases of radiation exposure.

• They contain non-radioactive iodine and can help block absorption of radioactive iodine.

Why in news - BJP MP from Jhansi, Anurag Sharma has been elected as Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) treasurer.

• He surpassed Amiya Mallick (100-metre in 10.26 seconds).

• Borgohain, who hails from Assam, also holds the national record in 200m in 20.52 seconds.

Why in news - Nuakhai is an annual harvest festival in Odisha, celebrated to welcome the season's new rice.

1. Telangana CM KCR in Bihar

Why in news – Telangana CM K. Chandrashekhar Rao arrived in Patna on Aug 31, 2022.

• Rao handed over cheques for Rs 10 lakh to each family of martyred soldiers in Galwan valley.

• CM of Bihar, West Bengal, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi, Kerala, Jharkhand and other states are part of the “Grand-alliance” to defeat BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

2. Cheap Electricity Technology

Why in news – IIT Patna has approved the idea of Jamui student Rohit, who came into the limelight recently with his water lifting technique.

• It was found that the technology can generate electricity again by using only 12.5% of the electricity generated from the upper dam.

• Now, it is being sent to the National Innovation Centre, Gujarat and the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee for formal approval for its commercial use.
