1. Amarnath Yatra

Why in news - The 43-day-long yatra to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath, located about 3,880 meters above sea level, began on June 30, 2022.

Key points –

• The 2,750 pilgrims were flagged off from the Nunwan base camp in the Anantnag district’s Pahalgam.

• The cave was discovered by a Muslim shepherd named Buta Malik in 1850.

• It is formed by a trickle of water from a cleft in the roof of the cave. As the water drips, it freezes to form a tall, smooth ice stalagmite.

• It gets its full shape in May every year, after which it begins to melt.

2. Renaming of Cities

Why in news - Maharashtra government cleared a proposal to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv on June 29, 2022.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. Limit on Curbing Carbon Emissions

Why in news - The U.S. Supreme Court imposed limits on the federal government’s authority to issue sweeping regulations to reduce carbon emissions from power plants.

Key points –

• The court’s 6-3 ruling came under the landmark Clean Air Act anti-pollution law.

• Biden's administration wants the U.S. power sector decarbonized by 2035.

• Top 3 GHG emission countries – China > United States > India.

2. Iran-US Doha Talks

Why in news - Indirect negotiations between Iran and the US over the nuclear deal ended in Qatar after failing to make significant progress.

Key points –

• Indirect talks between Iran and the United States were brokered by the EU (Mediator Enrique Mora).

• The talks began in April 2021 in Vienna but were suspended in March 2022.

About Iran Nuclear Deal –

• Official name - Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

• Signed in 2015 under President Barack Obama and dismantled in 2018 by President Donald Trump.

• Signed between Iran and P5+1 (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States + Germany).

• Israel strongly rejected the deal.

GOVERNMENT SCHEMES:

1. ‘One health’ Initiative

Why in news - The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal husbandry and Dairying has launched the project in Bengaluru, Karnataka on June 28.

Key points –

• Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are implementation partners.

• It is being implemented in Uttarakhand and Karnataka.

• Aim - To prevent future outbreaks of Zoonotic disease such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. National Doctor's Day

Why in news - India celebrates the day on July 1 to mark the birth and death anniversary of physician and second CM of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.

• It was first observed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on July 1, 1991.

About Snake Island –

• On February 24, two Russian warships Vasily Bykov and Moskva attacked and occupied the island.

• Snake or Serpent Island (Zmiinyi in Ukrainian or X-shaped island) is a rocky outcrop and is located in the Black Sea near the Danube Delta.

Why in news - Karnataka government has launched the scheme which offers a cash assistance of Rs 5,000 to each of the 30,000 pilgrims.

BIHAR:

1. CAG Report for 1st Pandemic Year

Why in news - A report by CAG of India on Bihar’s finances for the fiscal 2020-21 has flagged the state’s outstanding debt and high pendency of utilisation certificates for funds.

Key points –

• Utilisation certificates (UCs) of ₹ 92,687.31 crore were outstanding as on March 31, 2021.

• Fiscal deficit (2020-21) - ₹ 29,827 crore, an increase of ₹15,103 crores over the previous year.

• Revenue deficit (2020-21) - ₹ 11,325 crore. RD was for the second time since 2004-05.

• Outstanding public debt (₹ 1,77,214.85 crore) at the end of the year increased by ₹ 29,035 crores over the previous year.

• Total expenditure (2020-21) - ₹ 165696 crore.

• The state witnessed an increase of revenue receipts by ₹ 3,936 crore (3.17%) in 2020-21.

• Revenue expenditure increased by ₹ 13,476 crores (10.69 %) and capital expenditure increased by ₹ 5,905 crores (47.99 %).

2. Computerisation of PACS.

Why in news - 7000 PACS in Bihar to be Computerised.

Key points –

• CCEA headed by the Prime Minister has approved a plan of Rs 2516 crore for the computerization of 63,000 PACS in the country. (7000 in Bihar).

• 7000 panchayats of Bihar might get Rs 4,37,000 per panchayat.

• To be completed in the next 5 years from 2022-23.

• Funding – 60:40 (Centre : State).

3. Modi Nagar and Nitish Nagar

Why in news - State government to set up Modi Nagar and Nitish Nagar to settle the landless people in Bihar.

Key points –

• The plan is to settle 200 families by allotting 5-10 acres of land.

• It would start from Banka district. 8 acres has been marked in Rajoun, Banka.

• Landless families would be given 3 dismils of land.

• To be completed in every district within two years.

4. Barnar Reservoir Scheme

Why in news - Under it, 1135.87 acres of non-forest land is to be transferred in lieu of the forest land falling in the low lying area.

Key points –

• Out of it, 468.11 acres of non-forest land has been transferred by Revenue and Land Reforms Department to Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department in the year 2015.

• Barnar reservoir is located in Jamui.

• On completion, an irrigation facility would be available in the Sono, Jhajha, Gidhaur and Khaira blocks of the district.
