1. Adani Commits Rs 60,000 Crores

Why in news - Gautam Adani and his family have pledged to donate Rs 60,000 crore to charity to mark his 60th birthday.

Key points –

• It would be managed by the Adani Foundation.

• It is 8% of Adani’s USD 92 bn wealth.

• To be utilised in healthcare, education and skill development.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. US Supreme Court Ends Right to Abortion

Why in news - The US Supreme Court ended constitutional protection to abortion with 6-3 majority.

Key points –

• The ruling came in the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization case.

• It overturned the Roe vs Wade decision in 1973 that upheld a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose.

• Again, in Planned Parenthood versus Casey 1992, SC largely upheld women’s abortion rights.

2. Polio Virus Detected in UK

Why in news - UK on alert as polio virus was detected in sewage samples in London.

Key points –

• It is classified as a ‘vaccine-derived’ poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2).

• UK was declared polio-free in 2003. (last case of wild polio contracted in UK - 1984).

• Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two remaining countries in the world where polio is endemic after Nigeria was declared free of poliovirus in 2020.

• In 2014, India was officially declared polio-free.

3. Thiomargarita Magnifica (Magnificent Sulfur Pearl)

Why in news - Scientists have discovered the world's largest bacterium in a Caribbean mangrove swamp called Thiomargarita Magnifica.

Key points –

• It is the largest bacterium known to date. (size of a human eyelash and can be seen with the naked eye).

• Found at Guadeloupe mangroves.

1. Parameswaran Iyer

Why in news - Parameswaran Iyer has been appointed as the CEO of Niti Aayog (for two years) on June 24, 2022.

Key points –

• He spearheaded the Swachh Bharat Mission between 2016 and 2020.

• His book - ‘Method in the Madness – Insights from My Career as an Insider-Outsider-Insider’.

• He became the third CEO of the NITI Aayog after Sindhushree Khullar (1st) and Amitabh Kant (2nd).

• CEO is appointed by the Prime Minister (Chairperson of NITI Aayog).

2. Tapan Deka

Why in news - Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed Tapan Deka as Director of Intelligence Bureau and gave 1-year extension to RAW chief Samant Goel.

3. Dinkar Gupta

Why in news - Dinkar Gupta has been appointed Director-General of National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Why in news - According to the journal, COVID-19 vaccination drive in India prevented over 42.10 lakh deaths in 2021.

Key points –

• COVID-19 vaccines have prevented nearly 1.98 crore deaths worldwide out of a potential 3.14 crore deaths.

• Dr Oliver Watson from Imperial College London is the lead author of the study.

Why in news - Union Minister Prahlad Singh Patel has inaugurated the National Conference on Millets in New Delhi.

• Coarse cereals production has increased to 17.96 million tonnes in 2020-21 from 14.52 million tonnes in 2015-16.

4. JP Ganga Path

Why in news – Hon’ CM Nitish Kumar inaugurated the JP Ganga Path (7.5 km long) on June 25, 2022.

Key points –

• Along with this, CM also inaugurated Atal Path Phase 2.

• Cost of whole JP Ganga Path (20 km long) – Rs 3831 crores.

• This work was started on October 11, 2013 on the occasion of JP's birthday. To be completed by early 2024.

5. Supplementary Budget

Why in news – Hon’ minister Mangal Pandey tabled current fiscal’s first supplementary budget of ₹43,995.23 crores in the assembly on June 24, 2022.

6. Renting of Farm Equipments

Why in news – Farmers of Bihar would now be able to book tractors and other agricultural machines on rent.

Key points –

• Under the Mukhyamantri Harit Krishi Sanyantra Yojana (1st phase) –

A. Agricultural plant banks are being created in 2927 PACS.

B. Rs 439 crore has been released for this.

C. Machine banks have been made ready in 1803 PACS.

• In 2nd phase, all 8463 PACS of the state would be connected.

• The cooperative department is operating this scheme.

7. Justice Indu Prabha Singh

Why in news – Justice Indu Prabha Singh, the first lady judge of Patna High Court passed away on June 23, 2022. She joined the Bar at Patna High Court in 1971 and elevated to the Bench in 1990.
