NATIONAL:

1. Floor Test and Role of Governor

Why in news - The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra plunged into crisis after Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde revolted against his party.

Key Points –

Governor Powers –

• Article 174(2)(b) - Governor can dissolve the Assembly on the aid and advice of the cabinet. However, the Governor can apply his mind if the Chief Minister’s majority is in doubt.

• Article 175(2) - The Governor can summon the House and call for a floor test to prove whether the government has the numbers.

• When the House is in session, Speaker can call for a floor test. But when the Assembly is not in session, the Governor (Article 163) can call for a floor test.

• Shivraj Singh Chouhan & Ors versus Speaker, Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly & Ors in 2020, SC upheld the powers of the Speaker to call for a floor test if there is a prima facie view that the government has lost its majority.

2. Bharat Gaurav Tourist Train

Why in news – The country’s first Bharat Gaurav tourist train (by IRCTC) departed from Delhi's Safdarjung railway station on June 21, 2022.

Key Points –

• It is the first tourist train connecting India and Nepal.

• It has started its first Ramayana Circuit journey for 18 days (8000 km).

INTERNATIONAL:

1. Afghanistan Earthquake

Why in news - A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on June 22, 2022 killing at least 1,000 people.

Key Points –

• Worst hit area - Paktika, Khost.

• Epicentre - Paktika Province (Afghanistan).

• European seismological agency (EMSC) said the earthquake’s tremors were felt over 500 km across Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

• Another 4.3 magnitude earthquake Fayzabad, Afghanistan.

2. Pak secured IMF $6 bn aid

Why in news - Pakistan has secured a deal with the International Monetary Fund to restore the stalled USD 6 billion assistance package.

Key Points –

• Pakistani negotiation team was led by Miftah Ismail.

• The extended fund facility package (EFF) of USD 6 billion was agreed in July 2019 for a period of 39 months.

• EFF provide assistance to countries with weak balance of payments position.

3. Remains of Mosque Uncovered

Why in news - Israeli archaeologists unveiled a rare ancient mosque in the Bedouin city of Rahat, Isreal.

Key Points –

• The mosque is located in the Negev desert.

• 1,200 years old.

4. Sri Lankan Economy Collapsed

Why in news – PM Ranil Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka’s economy has ‘completely collapsed’.

GOVERNMENT SCHEMES:

1. One Nation One Ration Card Scheme

Why in news – Assam became the last or 36th state/UT to implement One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC).

Key Points –

• With this, the ONORC implemented in all states and UTs.

• The government has started 'Mera Ration' mobile application (13 languages) to get maximum benefit of ONORC scheme.

About ONORC –

• Being implemented under National Food Security Act 2013 (NFSA).

• It makes food security portable throughout the country.

• Implementation initiated in August 2019. Since then, 71 Crore portable transactions (43.6 crores NFSA and 27.8 crore PM-GKAY transactions) have taken place under ONORC.

2. NIPUN Project

Why in news – Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on June 20, 2022 launched it for skill training of construction workers.

Key Points –

• Full form - National Initiative for Promoting Upskilling of Nirman workers.

• By Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM).

• Aim - to train over 1 lakh construction workers, and provide them with work opportunities in foreign countries.

• National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is the implementation partner for this NIPUN project.

ENVIRONMENT:

1. Four New Corals Recorded

Why in news – Four new species of ‘azooxanthellate corals’ were found from the waters off the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Key Points –

• Azooxanthellate corals do not contain zooxanthellae and derive nourishment from capturing different forms of planktons. (not from sun).

• They are hard corals and have a highly compressed skeletal structure.

• Location - Deep ¬sea (200-1,000 m). Also reported from shallow waters.

• All four groups of corals belong to the family of Flabellidae.

2. Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP)

Why in news – Villagers protested against plans to shift the heritage park near KLNP, 53 km from Imphal in the Bishnupur district.

Key Points –

About KLNP –

• Location – Bishnupur, Manipur.

• It is an integral part of Loktak Lake and is the only floating park in the world.

• Special feature - Floating decomposed plant materials locally called phumdis.

• Animal - Brow-antlered deer (or sangai or dancing deer or Manipur Eld's deer). IUCN - Endangered.

1. World Rainforest Day

Why in news – It is celebrated annually on June 22 to honour and promote the world's rainforests.

Key Points –

• Theme - 'The Time is Now'.

• They cover just 6% of the Earth’s surface but are home to around 50 % of all terrestrial biodiversity found on Earth.

• It was first celebrated in 2017 by Rainforest Partnership.

• Amazon rainforest (lungs of our planet) is the world’s biggest rainforest.

1. Under-17 Asian Championship

Why in news – Indian Under-17 wrestling freestyle team won the Under-17 Asian Wrestling Championship on June 22, 2022.

Key Points –

• Won 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.

• Top 3 – India (188 points), Kazakhstan (150 points), Uzbekistan (145 points).

• Venue - Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

• Gold winners - Ningappa (45kg), Shubham (48kg) and Vaibhav Patil (55kg).

APPOINTMENTS:

1. Ruchira Kamboj

Why in news – Ruchira Kamboj has been appointed as the next Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations at New York.

Key Points –

• She is currently Indian ambassador to Bhutan.

• She would succeed T S Tirumurti.

• Upon release of Kofi Anan’s Blue Ribbon Panel Report (2014), she was part of the G-4 team that worked on the reform and expansion of UNSC.

1. Horticulture Development Scheme

Why in news – The Directorate of Horticulture plans for cultivation ornamental flowers in the highland area of 2.5 lakh sq m.

Key Points –

• For - Gerbera, Gladulai, Rose, Cucumber, Capsicum, off-season expensive vegetables, medicinal plants etc.

• This farming is done through polyhouse and shade net house.

• Govt grant – 75% including 25% top-up grant.

• The 60:40 central-state government partnership scheme was discontinued after 2012-13.

2. Caste Census in High Court

Why in news – Shashi Anand has challenged the decision of the government to conduct caste census in the High Court.

Key Points –

• Plea:

A. This decision is against the spirit of constitution.

B. Spending Rs 500 crore from the contingency fund (Article 267) for the purpose is unconstitutional.

3. Social Media Patrolling Unit

Why in news – The Police Headquarters has constituted a social media patrolling unit to keep an eye on objectionable post or provocative statement on social media.

• 10 to 15 personnel have been deployed under the leadership of a DSP working 24 hours a day.

4. Fit India Movement

Why in news – 65,536 people have registered from Bihar under Fit India movement.
