Why in news - PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Centre for Brain Research at IISc Bengaluru on June 20, 2022.

• NIMHANS (Bengaluru, KA) is the apex centre for mental health and neuroscience education in the country.

1. Khuvsgul Lake

Why in news - Mongolia’s Khuvsgul Lake National Park has been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO.

Key Points –

• The decision was made during the 34th session of the International Co-ordinating Council of MAB program taking place in Paris, France.

• It holds nearly 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water or 0.4% of the world’s total.

• The lake is 1,645 meters above sea level, 136 km long and 262 meters deep.

1.UN CBD CoP15

Why in news - UN convention on biological diversity (UNCBD) CoP15 would now happen in Montreal, Canada.

Key Points –

• From December 5 to 17, 2022

• Previous host – Kunming, China.

About UN CBD –

• CBD is a legally binding treaty to conserve biodiversity that has been in force since 1993.

• Secretariat of CBD - Montreal, Canada. it operates under UNEP.

• CBD supplements –

A. Cartagena Protocol (2000) - To protect biological diversity from the potential risks posed by LMOs resulting from modern biotechnology.

B. Nagoya Protocol (2010) - Access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization.

• Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 (Aichi Targets) - It provided a set of 20 ambitious targets.

• India enacted Biological Diversity Act in 2002.

1. Renewables 2022 : Global Status Report (GSR 2022)

Why in news – Recently, GSR 2022 was released by REN21 (Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century).

Key Points –

• For the first time, GSR 2022 provided a world map of renewable energy shares by country.

• India’s Performance –

A. India ranked 3rd in renewable energy installations in 2021 after China and Russia.

B. Hydropower Capacity (Total - 45.3 GW) - 843 MW added in 2021.

C. Solar PV (Total - 60.4 GW, overtook Germany 59.2 GW) - 13 GW added in 2021.

D. Wind Power (Total 40.1 GW).

SECURITY:

1. Operation Sankalp

Why in news – The Indian Navy has launched ‘Operation Sankalp’ in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman for the safety of thedian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Key Points –

• Op Sankalp launched in 2019

• Stealth Frigate INS Talwar is presently deployed.

About strait of Hormuz –

• Connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

• Bordered by Iran in the north and UAE and Oman’s Musandam peninsula in the south.

• Apx 33 km wide with shipping lane just 3km wide on both sides.

Why in news – Women soldiers of the Indian Army participated in the 4-day seminar at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Why in news – PM e-VIDYA has been accorded UNESCO recognition for using ICT, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Juneteenth Festival

Why in news – It is a federal holiday in the USA to commemorate the end of slavery after the American civil war (1861-65).

Key Points –

• It is observed on June 19 every year and is also known as Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day.

• On Jan 1, 1863, then-president Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

• On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger issued an order to free the last enslaved people on US soil.

1. Sunil Chhetri

Why in news – Sunil Chhetri became the joint fifth highest goal scorer in international football history.

• Chhetri achieved this feat by scoring his 84th goal in AFC Asian Cup Qualifier clash against Hong Kong.

• CM Matrushakti Yojana - First scheme of Gujarat to tackle the deficiency of diet within the first 1,000 days of the conception of the child (till 2 years of pregnancy).

• Poshan Sudha Yojana - Pregnant and lactating mothers registered in Anganwadi are provided complete nutritious food.

BIHAR:

1. Cabinet Meeting

Why in news – The cabinet meeting was held under the chairmanship of hon’ CM Nitish Kumar on June 21, 2022.

Key Points –

• The cabinet has approved 13 agendas.

A. Krishi Mechanization Scheme has been approved for 2022-23 (Rs. 94.05 crores) and approved the grant on 90 agricultural machines for 2022-23.

B. Under CM Divyangjan Empowerment scheme, people would get 10,000 battery-operated tricycles. (Rs 42 crores approved).

C. Rs 10,000 crores for buying Ravi and wheat.

D. Construction of ropeway on Brahmayoni (Rs 8.76 crores) and Dungeshwari hills (Rs 16.76) in Gaya.

E. Rs 10,000 crores operational loan to different procurement bodies in the state for buying wheat and paddy.

2. CM Beggary Prevention Scheme

Why in news – Central government has adopted Bihar’s Beggary Prevention Scheme as ‘model’.

Key Points –

• It is being implemented as a pilot project in 10 states. (Cities – Mumbai, Chennai, Bhopal, Lucknow, Kolkata, Delhi, Indore, Nagpur and Hyderabad).

• On similar lines, Centre has formulated SMILE - Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise.
