• It is a 14-day exercise.

• India- Mongolia bilateral military exercise - Nomadic Elephants.

2. BALTOPS 22 Exercise

Why in news – 14 NATO allies and 2 NATO partner nations, Finland and Sweden, participated in the exercise Baltic Operations (BALTOPS 22, 51st edition).

• Location - Baltic Sea (June 5 to 17).

• Host Country – Sweden.

• The US Sixth Fleet is leading the exercise.

1.‘Astonishing’ result in cancer drug trial

Why in news - ‘First time in history’, cancer vanishes from every patient’s body in a drug trial.

1. Environment Performance Index (EPI) 2022

Why in news - Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, Columbia University released the index.

Key Points –

• India has been placed at the bottom 180th rank (score - 18.9) (EPI-2020 – 168th).

• Top 3 – Denmark (1st,) UK (2nd), Finland (3rd).

• Bottom 3 – India (180th), Myanmar (179th), Vietnam (178th).

• It uses 40 performance indicators across 11 issue categories.

• China - 161st (score - 28.4), United States – 43rd.

2. State Food Safety Index

Why in news - The fourth edition of the State Food Safety Index (by FSSAI) was released by Mansukh Mandaviya on June 7, 2022.

Key Points –

• Top 3 (larger states) - Tamil Nadu (1st), Gujarat (2nd), Maharashtra (3rd).

• Top 3 (smaller states) - Goa (1st), Manipur (2nd), Sikkim (3rd).

• Top 3 UTs - Jammu and Kashmir (1st), Delhi (2nd), Chandigarh (3rd).

• The states were judged on five parameters of food safety.

• It was started in 2018-19.

• He also launched the Ayurveda Aahar logo for easy identification of ayurvedic foods.

• India was re-elected to the ITU Council for the term 2023-2026.

ENVIRONMENT:

1. Cheetah Reintroduction in India

Why in news - The first batch of 5-6 Cheetahs would be translocated from South Africa to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh by August 15.

Key Points –

• To import 32 Cheetahs over a period of time.

• Rs 38.7 crore from Project Tiger was allocated for the Cheetah reintroduction project between 2021-22 and 2025-26.

• The cheetah was declared extinct from India in 1952.

• In 1947, Maharaja Ramanuj Pratap Singh Deo of Koriya had shot the last three recorded Asiatic cheetahs.

• A second conservation centre for the Great Indian Bustard (GIB) at Ramdevra in Rajasthan is under development.

2. Blue Duke

Why in news - Blue Duke has been declared as the state butterfly of Sikkim on June 5, 2022.

Key Points –

• Scientific name - Bassarona durga durga.

• It is unique to Sikkim and the eastern Himalayas and was discovered in the state in 1858.

• It falls in Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

BIHAR:

1. Eastern end of Mahatma Gandhi Setu Inaugurated

Why in news - Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the eastern flank of renovated Mahatma Gandhi Setu on June 7, 2022.

Key Points –

• It became the longest steel bridge in the country.

• Length - 5.6 km, Iron used - 66.380 tonnes.

• Construction work of the eastern lane started in the year 2017.

• A 4-lane bridge (6 km long) being constructed parallel to Gandhi Setu would be ready by September 2024. Cost -Rs 2926.42 crores.

• Gandhi Setu (on river Ganga) was built by Gammon India Limited in 1982 to connect North and South Bihar. It connects NH 30 (Patna) and NH 19 (Hajipur).

• He also laid the foundation stone/completion of road and bridge projects in Bihar worth ₹13,585 crore.

• Foundation stone was laid for –

• Munger-Bhaglpur-Mirzapur four-lane new greenfield corridor.

• Aurangabad to Chordhaha (Jharkhand border) six-lane road.

• Begusarai town four-lane elevated flyover.

• AIIMS Patna to Naubatpur two-lane road.

• Road network in Bihar – 2.91 lakh km (India- 62.16 lakh km), 3086 km2 road per 10,000 km (India – 1617 km2 per 10,000 km).

2. Emergency Response Support System (ERSS)

Why in news - The trial of ERSS ‘Dial 112’ has started from Patna.

Key Points –

• Emergencies covered - Police, fire, ambulance, accident and traffic related services.

• A control room has been set up at the Bihar Police Radio Headquarters located at Rajvanshi Nagar.

• Response time is 25 minutes.

• One vehicle has to cover a radius of 1 km.

• After trial, Patna would be divided into 60 zones.

3. Check-up of pregnant women

Why in news – Patna district tops in terms of health checkups (>5000 ante-natal checkups) of pregnant women.
