1. Valley of Flowers

Why in news – 'Valley of Flowers' opened for visitors in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district June 1, 2022.

Key Points –

• On Nov 6, 1982, it was declared a national park, while in 2005 UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage Site.

• It was discovered in 1931 by Frank S Smythe.

• Brahmkamal is the state flower of Uttarakhand.

• Blue Poppy is called Queen of Himalayan Flowers.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. India held talks with Taliban

Why in news For the first time since the Taliban takeover, India has sent an official delegation to Afghanistan.

Key Points –

• It was led by J.P. Singh.

• India has sent 20,000 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat, 13 tonnes of medicines and 500,000 doses of Covid vaccines for the Afghan people.

• Taliban took over Afghanistan on August 15, 2021.

2. Israeli Defence Minister Visited India

Why in news – Benny Gantz is on his first official visit to India.

Key Points –

• Both signed an MoU to mark 30 years of security ties.

• India recognised Israel in 1950 but full diplomatic relations were established on January 29, 1992.

3. COVAX Facility

Why in news – Bangladesh is the top recipient of COVID 19 vaccines under the COVAX facility.

Key Points –

• It has received over 190 million doses (62%) of COVID 19 vaccines.

• COVAX facility is a global initiative co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and WHO.

1. Textiles and Apparel Exports

Why in news – India has recorded its highest-ever textiles and apparel exports at $44.4 billion in FY-2022.

• Top export destination – USA (27%) > EU (18%) > Bangladesh (12%) > UAE (6%).

• Product category - Cotton textiles ($17.2 b) > Ready-made garments ($16 bn) > Man-made textiles ($6.3 bn) > Handicrafts ($2.1 bn).

Why in news – The Times Higher Education (THE) on June 1, 2022 released the latest edition of Asia University Rankings.

Key Points –

• It comprises 616 universities from 31 countries and territories.

• Top 3 - Tsinghua University (1st), Peking University (2nd), National University of Singapore (3rd).

• India is the 3rd most-represented country (Japan – 1st, China – 2nd) with 71 institutions. (2021- 62 institutions).

1. Stockholm +50 Conference

Why in news – It is being held to commemorate 50 years of the Stockholm Conference (June 5-16, 1972) — the first UN conference on the environment.

Key Points –

• Environment minister Bhupender Yadav presented India.

• Date - June 2-3 in Stockholm, Sweden.

• Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) - It was launched by Sweden and India at the UN Climate Action Summit in September 2019 to achieve the Paris Agreement climate goal.

• Indira Gandhi was the only foreign head of government out of 113 nations to attend the conference in 1972.

4. Online Portal for House Maps

Why in news – People can apply online on portal to make map of houses in Patna.

• The Municipal Corporation has created this portal under the guidance of Urban Development and Housing Department.

5. North Koel Reservoir Project

Why in news – The way forwad for the reservoir was cleared in a meeting chaired by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

Key Points –

• In meeting, it was decided to reduce the full water level (FRL) from 367.28 m to 341 m to avoid submerged of Betla NP in Jharkhand.

About the Reservoir

• It is situated on the North Koel river (origin - Ranchi plateau), a tributary of the Son river.

• North Koel River flows through the Betla National Park.

• Construction started in 1972 but stopped in 1993.

• Sanctioned money – Rs 1738 crores.

• Length – 77.70 km (Bihar) and 31.40 km (JH).

• Palamu and Garhwa districts of Jharkhand as well as Aurangabad and Gaya districts of Bihar would got irrigation in 111,521 hectares of land.

6. GI tag for sweets of Bihar

Why in news – An initiative by NABARD would be taken to get GI tag for sweets like Khurma, Tilkut and Balushahi.
