1. Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF)

Why in news - The 17th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) began at 29th May 2022. (29th May to 4th June).

• Bangladesh is the ‘Country of Focus’ to commemorate its 50 years of independence.

• Total of 11 films including ‘Hasina: A Daughter's Tale’ was screened.

• Special screening of ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ (1st animation film co-produced by India and Japan).

2. Nano Urea (Liquid) Plant

Why in news – PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the world’s first Nano Urea Liquid plant by IFFCO at Kalol, Gandhinagar (Gujarat) on 28th May.

Key Points –

• It has been indigenously developed at Nano Biotechnology Research Centre, Kalol, Gujrat.

• It has production capacity of 1.5 lakh bottles per day.

1. India’s Biggest Trading Partner

Why in news - The US surpassed China to become India’s top trading partner in 2021-22.

Key Points –

• India-USA trade (2021-22) - $119.42 billion. (2020-21 - $80.51 billion).

• Exports to USA - $76.11 billion, Imports - $43.31 billion.

• India-China trade (2021-22) - $115.42 billion (2020-21 - $86.4 billion).

• India’s top 5 trading partners – USA > China > UAE > Saudi Arabia > Iraq.

SECURITY:

1. INS Gomati

Why in news - Indian Navy has decommissioned INS Gomati after 34 years of its service in Mumbai on 28th May.

Key Points –

• It was commissioned on 16th April 1988.

• An MoU was signed between the Uttar Pradesh government and the Indian Navy to build an open-air museum on the banks of the Gomti river in Lucknow.

1. Indian Business Portal

Why in news - Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel launched the Indian Business Portal in New Delhi.

Key Points –

• It helps Indian startups, SMEs, artisans and farmers to reach more foreign buyers.

• It was designed by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) and GlobalLinker.

• India’s overall exports touched $676.2 Bn in FY22. ($526.6 Bn in FY20 and $497.9 Bn in FY21).

Why in news - Lovlina Borgohain has been elected as chairman and voting member on the Board of Directors for the IBA’s Athletes Committee.

• She had won the bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics 2021.

• Boxer Shiva Thapa has also been elected as a member of the IBA Athletes Committee.

1. L’Oeil d’Or documentary award (or Golden Eye Award)

Why in news - Shaunak Sen’s documentary ‘All That Breathes’ has won the 2022 L’Oeil d’Or award at Cannes 2022.

Key Points –

• It was India’s only entry at the Cannes.

• Earlier, the film also won the World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Award on 28th January.

Why in news - World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed on 28th May every year to spread awareness and end the stigma around menstruation.

1. National Mineral Congress

Why in news - The Ministry of Coal organised the National Mineral Congress in Bhubaneswar on 27th May with the support of Power Ministry, Steel Ministry and Mines Ministry.

Key Points –

• Government aims to achieve 100 MT Coal Gasification by 2030.

• Jindal Steel & Power commissioned the coal gasification plant of 225,000 Normal Meter Cubed per Hour (Nm3/hr) capacity in 2014 at Angul, Odisha.

• India has a reserve of 307 billion tonnes of thermal coal and about 80% of coal produced is used in thermal power plants.

2. 3rd Global Organic Expo 2022

Why in news - 3rd Global Organic Expo 2022 concluded on 28th May. (26-28th May).

Key Points –

• Theme - Profitability for Humanity.

• Venue - Indian Agriculture Research Institute, Pusa, New Delhi.

• India ranks 1st in number of organic farmers and 9th in terms of area under organic farming.

• Sikkim became the 1st State in the world to become fully organic in 2016.

1. ISSF Junior World Cup 2022

Why in news - International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup 2022 concluded at Suhl in Germany.

Key Points –

• Indian junior shooting team came in 1st position overall. (2nd - Italy).

• They won 33 medals in total. (13 gold, 15 silver and 5 bronze).

• Indian contingent was led by Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary.

• In ISSF Junior World Cup (2021), India had 43 medals. (17 golds, 16 silvers and 10 bronze).

2. IPL 2022

Why in news - Gujarat Titans won the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by defeating Rajasthan Royals on 29th May.

• Purple cap winner : Yuzvendra Chahal (RR) (27 Wickets).

1. Uttarakhand forms panel to implement Uniform Civil Code.

Why in news - Uttarakhand has constituted a five-member committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Key Points –

• It would be chaired by SC judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.

• Other members - Pramod Kohli, Manu Gaur, Shatrughan Singh and Surekha Dangwal.

• Uttarakhand would be the 2nd state after Goa to implement UCC.

• UCC is a directive principle under Article 44 of the Constitution.

• SC in the Shah Bano case (1985) and Sarla Mudgal Case (1995) asked government to move towards a UCC.

BIHAR:

1. Ganga Water Supply Scheme

Why in news - Under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan, the Ganga water supply scheme would start functioning from May 2022.

Key Points –

• It would provide drinking water to Rajgir, Navada, Gaya and Bodh Gaya.

• Currrently, Water would be stored in Rajgir. (Tank capacity - 78500 cubic meters).

• Rajgir reservoir (Area – 357.64 acre) is being constructed between Ghorakatora lake and Panchane river for water supply in Rajgir city.

2. Mega Textile Park

Why in news - The proposed Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel Park would be setup in West Champaran.

Key Points –

• 1700 acres of land has been identified in Bagaha, Madhubani and Bhithan.

• Under the Pradhan Mantri Mitra Yojana, 7 Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel Parks would be established across the country.

• Under the Cluster Development Scheme, contribution of government is fixed at 90% (maximum 10 crores) to promote MSMEs in Bihar.

5. Har Khet Tak Pani Yojana

Why in news – Under the scheme, work on Minor irrigation would be done on 203 programs this year.

Key Points –

• State government has made an action plan of 200 crores for this. (from budget – 200cr).

• An outline of 29000 programs (26652 schemes - Micro Water Resources department) has been made.

• Under the Saat Nishchay-2, government aims to provide irrigation to every field between 2020-2025.

• It would irrigate an area of 5.96 lakh hectares. Budget – Rs 5573 crores.
