1. Life term to Yasin Malik

Why in news - NIA court awarded the life sentence and a fine of Rs 10,65,000 to Yasin Malik in connection with a 2017 terror-funding case.

Key points –

• Additional Sessions Judge Parveen Singh awarded the sentence.

• Punishment has given under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

• He is chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founded in June 1976 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. Texas School Shooting

Why in news - An 18-year-old gunman opened fire at a Texas elementary school (USA), killing at least 19 children and two adults.

Key points –

• Shooter name - Salvador Ramos.

• It was the deadliest school shooting since a gunman killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December 2012.

2. One China Policy

Why in news – US President Biden said on 23rd May that he would use military force to defend Taiwan if it were ever attacked by China.

Key points –

About ‘One China Policy’ –

• Under it, US snapped ties with the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan), and established ties with the People’s Republic of China (PRC, Beijing) in 1979.

• It is outlined in three documents — the Shanghai Communique (1972), the Normalisation Communique (1979) and the 1982 Communique.

• Since 1949, India has accepted the ‘One China’ policy that accepts Taiwan and Tibet as part of China.

1. Swachh Survekshan 2023

Why in news – Shri Manoj Joshi has launched the 8th edition of Swachh Survekshan (SS) – SS 2023 under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 on 24th May 2022.

Key points –

• Theme - ‘Waste to Wealth’.

• It would give priority to the principle of 3Rs – Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.

• Swachh Survekshan was introduced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in 2016.

• Last Swachh Survekshan (2022) covered 4,355 cities and 85,860 wards.

1. World Thyroid Awareness Day 2022

Why in news – It is observed on 25th May to promote awareness and understanding of thyroid diseases, their symptoms, prevention, and treatments.

Key points –

• Thyroid Awareness Week (May 22 and 28) theme- ‘It’s not you. It’s your thyroid’.

• The day came into existence in 2008 on a proposal by the European Thyroid Association (ETA).

1. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

Why in news – World Health Assembly re-elects Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to a second term (umopposed) as WHO Director-General.

Key points –

• Dr Tedros was first elected in 2017.

• He is the first African (Ethiopia) to head WHO.

• He had received 155 of the 160 votes cast.

1. Travel & Tourism Development Index 2021

Why in news – The World Economic Forum published its 2021 edition of the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report (TTCR).

Key points –

• Title - ‘Travel & Tourism Development Index 2021: Rebuilding for a Sustainable and Resilient Future’,

• It consists of 5 subindexes, 17 pillars and 112 individual indicators.

• Top five – Japan(1st), USA(2nd), Spain(3rd), France(4th), Germany (5th).

• India - 54th rank (score of 4.2) (46th in 2019).

2. National Achievement Survey Report (NAS) 2021

Why in news – National Achievement Survey Report (NAS) 2021 was released on 25th May 2022 by the Ministry of Education.

Key points –

• It was conducted on 12th November 2021 (last NAS - 2017).

• Comprehensive evaluation of students from classes 3, 5, 8, and 10.

• It assessed over 34 lakh students in 1.18 lakh schools at 720 districts across 36 states and Union Territories.

3. Global Air Powers Ranking for 2022

Why in news – The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) released Global Air Powers Ranking for 2022.

Key points –

• Top 3 Air force - USA (1st), Russia (2nd), India (3rd).

• Score – USA (242.9), Russia (114.2), India (69.4).

• According to the report, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has a total of 1,645 active aircraft in its inventory.

Why in news – Kishore Jayaraman has received an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty The Queen.

1. Shirui Lily Festival

Why in news - The 4th edition of the Shirui Lily Festival began (25th May) at Shirui village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.

Key points –

• It is a 4-day (25-28th May) festival.

• ‘Shirock’ is a singing competition related to this festival.

• Shirui lily or ‘Lilium Mackliniae’ is found exclusively in the upper range of the Shirui Kashong peak.

• It was discovered by English botanist Kingdon F Ward in 1946.

1. Kerala to cull wild boars

Why in news - The Kerala government has empowered local bodies to cull wild boars that pose a threat to agricultural crops.

Key points –

• Section 11¬B (1) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 empowers Chief Wildlife Warden (CWW) to issue special orders to kill wild animal.

• Earlier, Centre has turned down a suggestion by the State to declare wild boars as vermin.

Why in news - Uttarakhand becomes the 1st Indian state to roll out drone in healthcare.

• Redcliffe Labs has completed its first commercial drone flight in the healthcare sector between Uttarkashi and Dehradun.

Why in news - CRPF Cobra Battalion has uncovered the hideout in Khapra hill area of Munger and recovered arms of CPI-Maoist organization.

2. Hon CM Nitish Kumar inaugurated 17 buildings

Why in news – CM Nitish Kumar inaugurated 17 buildings of Science and Technology Department costing Rs 893.60 crore through video conferencing.

Key points –

• Also, laid foundation stone for 5 buildings costing Rs 193.67 crore.

• Earlier, only 13.9% of the children (17-23 years of age) used to get higher education. (National – 25%). Government want to increase it to 30%.

• According to the 2021 report, this ratio has reached 19.3% in Bihar.

3. Kosi-Mechi link yojana

Why in news – Water Resources Minister Sanjay Kumar Jha has said that the work of Bihar's ambitious Kosi-Mechi link scheme would start soon.

Key points –

• The Kosi Mechi main link canal (41.30 km) in the Araria district would jthe oin Mechi River at Kishanganj after covering a distance of 76.20 km.

• Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj and Araria, would get irrigation facility in more than 2,15,000 hectare area as well as relief from floods.

4. National Education Excellence Award

Why in news – Ayushi Singh and Rajhans Singh have been awarded for their excellent work in the field of education of Bihar.

Why in news – Biodiversity of Bihar has been praised in Chennai on the occasion of International biodiversity day.
