1. Gambia Cough Syrup Deaths

Why in news - A 4-member panel set up to find out if the deaths of children in Gambia were caused by cough syrups.

Key Points –

• Panel members - Dr YK Gupta, Dr Pragya Yadav, Dr Arti Bahl and A K Pradhan.

• Cough syrups were manufactured by Sonepat-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals.

• WHO raised an alert that four cough syrups manufactured by the Sonepat company might have killed 66 children in Gambia.

1. Hindu temple Dubai (UAE)

Why in news - A majestic new Hindu Temple has been inaugurated in Jebel Ali Village, Dubai.

Key Points –

• It is located in “Worship Village” of UAE.

• The ‘Worship Village’ of UAE now has nine religious’ shrines.

• It was inaugurated by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and Ambassador Sunjay Sudhir.

1. Ethanol Subsidy Scheme

Why in news - The Centre has extended the disbursement of loans up to March 31, 2023.

Key Points –

• Scheme name - Ethanol blending program interest subsidy scheme (launch - 2018).

• India needs 1016 crore litres of ethanol by 2025 to achieve the 20% ethanol blending target.

ECONOMY:

1. Inflation Rises to 7.4%

Why in news - Retail inflation rate reached 7.41% in September (22-month high).

Key Points –

• As per Index of Industrial Production, factory output slipped into negative territory to (-) 0.8% in August.

• Food inflation (Combined food price index) rose to 8.60% in September.

• As per MPC Framework Agreement, RBI will now have to write to the government explaining the reasons for its failure to keep inflation under target.

1. International Migration Outlook 2022

Why in news - The report was released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Key Points –

• Students from China (22%) and India (10%) account for the largest share of foreign students in OECD countries.

• About a third of the world’s population aged 20-29 live in China and India.

• OECD is an intergovernmental organisation with 38 member countries.

• India is not an OECD member.

ENVIRONMENT:

1. Living Planet Report

Why in news – It was released recently by the World Wildlife Fund.

Key Points –

• The report is based on WWF’s Living Planet Index of wildlife species.

• The report was produced by Zoological Society of London.

• It reveals a devastating 69% drop in wildlife populations between 1970 and 2018.

2. Slender Loris Sanctuary

Why in news – Tamil Nadu notified India’s first slender loris sanctuary.

Key Points –

• Location - Karur and Dindigul districts in Tamil Nadu.

• Sanctuary name - Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary.

About Slender Loris –

• Nocturnal animals.

• IUCN – Endangered.

• Wildlife (Protection) Act - Schedule I.

• Native to of southern India and Sri Lanka.

Why in news – It is observed on Oct 13 for risk awareness and catastrophe preparedness.
