1. Old Pension Scheme (OPS)

Why in news – The old pension scheme came into effect in Jharkhand on Sept 1, 2002.

Key Points -

• OPS was discontinued on April 1, 2004, and replaced by the National Pension System (NPS).

• Chhattisgarh (1st state) and Rajasthan have already reinstated OPS.

2. India Fifth-Largest Economy

Why in news – According to Bloomberg, India has become the world’s 5th-largest economy overtaking United Kingdom in March 2022.

Key Points -

• Bloomberg used the IMF database and historic exchange rates for calculation.

• According to the IMF –

A. United States ($22.49 trillion)

B. China ($16.4 trillion)

C. Japan: ($5.27 trillion)

D. Germany: ($4.30 trillion)

E. India: ($3.21 trillion)

• The per capita income in India remains very low (India rank - 122 out of 190 countries).

1. Studentship Programme for Ayurveda Research Ken (SPARK)

Why in news – Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) has launched the 'SPARK' program.

Key Points -

• It aims to support the research ideas of young undergraduate students.

• The selected fellows would be offered a financial support of Rs 50,000.

• CCRAS (Hq - New Delhi) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of AYUSH.

1. Ramon Magsaysay Award 2022

Why in news – CPI (Marxist) scuttled the chance of former Kerala health minister KK Shailaja winning the Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2022.

Key Points -

• Shailaja was selected for the award for her commitment and service towards ensuring an accessible public health system during Covid-19 outbreak.

• If awarded, she would have been the fifth Keralite to get the honour after Verghese Kurien, M S Swaminathan, B G Verghese and T N Seshan.

• She would have been the first Keralite woman to receive the same.

2. Emmy Award

Why in news – Barack Obama won Emmy award for his narration in the Netflix documentary “Our Great National Parks".

Key Points -

• It was produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, “Higher Ground.”

• Barack Obama is the 2nd president to have an Emmy. (1st -Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956).

3. Lifetime Achievement Award

Why in news – Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has been conferred with Capital Foundation “Lifetime Achievement Award”.

Key Points -

• The award was presented by former CJI NV Ramana at a function in New Delhi.

1. Hyderabad Liberation Day

Why in news – Centre has decided to mark Hyderabad State Liberation Day on September 17.

Key Points -

• Telangana Government would observe September 17 as Telangana National Unity Day.

• On September 17, 1948, the erstwhile state of Hyderabad got liberated from the Nizam rule. (Operation Polo)

• Bhairanapally massacre (August 27, 1948,) - Razakars killed 96 villagers to quell their uprising for demanding the merger of Nizam dominion into the Indian Union.

2. Teachers’ Day 2022

Why in news – It is celebrated on September 5 to commemorate the importance of teachers in our lives.

Key Points -

• It celebrates the birth anniversary (September 5, 1888) of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

• He served as the 1st Vice President of India (1952-62) and 2nd President of India (1962-67).

• He authored the book “The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore” in 1917.

• He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954.

• He was admitted as an honorary member of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.

1. Night Sky Sanctuary

Why in news – India’s first-ever “Night Sky Sanctuary” would be set up at Hanle Ladakh.

Key Points -

• It would be set up as a part of Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.

• A tripartite MoU was signed among the UT administration, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) for launching the dark space reserve.

1. Justice DY Chandrachud

Why in news – President Draupadi Murmu has nominated Justice DY Chandrachud as the next executive chairperson of NALSA.

Key Points -

• The position was vacant after Justice U.U. Lalit was elevated as the 49th CJI.

• NALSA was constituted in 1995 under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

2. Kalyan Chaubey

Why in news – Kalyan Chaubey becomes the new All India Football Federation (AIFF) President.

Key Points -

• He defeated Bhaichung Bhutia 33-1 in polls decided by the 34-member voters’ list.

• Kalyan Chaubey became the first former national team player to be elected as the head of AIFF.

• Previously, the Bihar team had got this distinction in the tournament held in Baroda in 2007.
