NATIONAL:

1. Indian Naval Ensign

Why in news - PM Modi will unveil the new naval ensign (flag) for the Indian Navy in Kochi on September 2, 2022.

Key Points –

• On Sept 2, PM Modi will commission India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard Limited.

About the Ensign –

• It will replace the present ensign that carries the Saint George’s Cross.

• On Jan 26, 1950, Union Jack was replaced with the Tricolour and the George’s Cross was retained.

• Changes in the naval ensign were made in 2001, 2004 and 2014.

2. Mandatory Forensic Investigation

Why in news - Delhi Police has become the first police force in the country to make a collection of forensic evidence mandatory.

Key Points –

• Applicable in crimes punishable by more than six years.

• Amit Shah while speaking at a Zonal Council meeting in Bhopal (Aug 22) called for the collection of forensic evidence compulsory in criminal cases.

3. Temple of Vedic Planetarium

Why in news – The world’s largest religious monument to open in West Bengal by 2024.

Key Points –

• Location - Mayapur (Nadia, WB).

• It is expected to cost $100 million.

• It would replace Cambodia's 400-acre-large Angkor Wat temple complex.

• It would serve as the headquarters of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and would have the world’s biggest dome.

• It is inspired by the design of the Capitol building in the United States.

1. Flash Appeal for $160 Million

Why in news - UN issued flash appeal for $160 million to help Pakistan with floods.

Key Points –

• Floods have affected more than 33 million people or more than 15% of its population.

• Torrential rain has triggered flash floods that have crashed down from northern mountains.

2. 'Man of The Hole' Dies

Why in news - An unidentified indigenous man living in the Amazon Forest in Brazil has died.

Key Points –

• He was believed to be the last man in his tribe.

• He was known as Indio do Buraco (Indigenous man of the hole) for his inhabiting techniques which involved deep holes dug by him.

3. Suspension of Foreign Naval Visits

Why in news - Solomon Islands suspended all visits from foreign Navies citing a need to review approval processes.

Key Points –

• Recently, a U.S. Coast Guard ship was unable to re-fuel at its port.

• Solomon Islands switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 2019.

• It signed a security pact with China in April 2022.

BIHAR:

1. 20 Scrap Centers in Bihar

Why in news – To destroy old and worn vehicles, 20 scrap centers would be started in the state.

Key Points –

• The Transport Department has given permission to open 20 scrap centers in 15 districts.

• The maximum 5 scrap centers are in Patna.

• Commercial vehicles (>15 years old) or private vehicles (>20 years old) which have not been re-registered, would be scrapped.

• License of the scrap center would be issued for a maximum period of 10 years, after which it can be renewed.

• For non-commercial vehicles, a tax rebate of 25% on the purchase of a new vehicle while 15% in the case of commercial vehicles would be provided.

2. NCRB data 2021

Why in news – As per NCRB Data 2021, in the overall crime in the country, Bihar is in the 7th position (1.86 lakh IPC cases).

• Bihar is at the top in crime per lakh.

• Bihar is the 2nd dangerous state in the country in terms of murder (1st - UP).

• Most of the disputes for land in the country take place in Bihar (total - 3336 cases) (land dispute rate per lakh - 2.7).

• In case of theft, Bihar is at 3rd place with 38,277 cases.

Why in news – The State Investment Promotion Board has approved 48 investment proposals worth Rs 1077 crores in the state.
