NATIONAL:

1. Asia's Largest CBG Plant

Why in news - Asia’s largest Compressed Biogas Plant begins commercial operations in Sangrur, Punjab.

Key Points –

• Total capacity - 33.23 tonnes CBG per day.

• CBG is being supplied to the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL).

• The Punjab Energy Development Agency has also decided to setup 42 additional CBG projects with a total capacity of 492.58 tonnes per day.

2. Super Vasuki

Why in news - The Railways have conducted operational trial of longest goods train in the country Super Vasuki.

Key Points –

• It is 3.5 km-long having 295 wagons and 6 locos.

• Trial was conducted between Korba in Chhattisgarh and Rajnandgao in Nagpur.

• It was operated by the South East Central Railway.

3. 100% “Har Ghar Jal” Certification

Why in news - Goa became the first state to achieve 100% “Har Ghar Jal” certification under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

Key Points –

• Recently, Burhanpur (MP) became the first “Har Ghar Jal” certified district of the country.

• JJM aims to provide piped water to all rural households by 2024.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. USS Jacob Jones

Why in news - US ship USS Jacob Jones sunk by Germans in 1917 is found off English coast.

Key Points –

• It was the first US destroyer to be lost to enemy action.

• It was sunk by a German submarine on Dec 6, 1917 during WWI.

GOVERNMENT SCHEMES:

1. Paalan 1000

Why in news - Union Minister Bharti Pravin Pawar launched the Paalan 1000 campaign and parenting app in Mumbai.

Key Points –

• Aim - To reduce the child mortality rate and take care of the first 1000 days a child after birth.

• Mortality rate (2014) - 45 per 1000 live births, 2019 - 35 per 1000 live births.

• The concept of “Continuum of Care” is being followed under the national program.

APPS & PORTALS:

1. NIDAAN Portal

Why in news - India’s first portal on arrested narcotics offenders gets operational.

Key Points –

• NIDAAN or the National Integrated Database on Arrested Narco-offenders.

• It has been developed by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

• It is part of the narcotics coordination mechanism (NCORD) portal launched by Amit Shah.

• It sources its data from the ICJS (inter-operable criminal justice system) and the e-Prisons repository.

ECONOMY:

1. Inflation Target Breached

Why in news - RBI committee will meet after Oct 12 to draft report for Government explaining the reasons for the average retail inflation remaining above the upper tolerance limit of 6 per cent.

Key Points –

• Reason - Retail inflation slipped beyond the upper tolerance limit of 6% for 3 straight quarters.

• In the last 8 years, it happened for the first time.
Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)

• The Union government, in consultation with the RBI, fixes the inflation target every 5 years.

• It had fixed it at 4% +/- 2% (upper limit 6%, lower limit 2%) for the next five years (Apr 1, 2021 – Mar 31, 2026).

• MPC requires the RBI to submit a report to the Union government if inflation targets are breached for 3 consecutive quarters.

SUMMITS & CONFERENCES:

1. 9th India-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting

Why in news – EAM S. Jaishankar arrived in Thailand to attend the meeting.

Key Points –

• The meeting was co-chaired by Jaishankar and Don Pramudwinai.

• He offered prayers at the Devasthana (a Hindu temple) at Bangkok. God of this temple - Maharajaguru Vidhi.

• Thailand was the country Coordinator for India-ASEAN Strategic Partnership for 2018-21.

2. National Security Strategies Conference 2022

Why in news – The two-day conference was concluded on Aug 18, 2022.

Key Points –

• It was chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah.

• He also mentioned that for the first time the country had developed National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS).

• Shah had instructed the DGPs of the bordering areas to keep a close watch on the demographic changes.

SECURITY:

1. Vostok 2022

Why in news – India will take part in the Vostok-2022 strategic command and staff exercise in Russia.

Key Points –

• It also includes the armies of China, Belarus, Tajikistan and Mongolia.

• It is a strategic command and staff exercise under the Valery Gerasimov.

• Duration - August 30 to September 5.

ENVIRONMENT:

1. India’s First Electric Double-Decker Bus

Why in news – Nitin Gadkari unveiled India’s first electric double-decker air-conditioned bus in Mumbai.

Key Points –

• It was manufactured by Switch Mobility (Ashok Leyland).

• The rest will hit the city’s roads by mid-2023.

Why in news – Researchers have found new evidence about the life of Megalodon.

Key Points –

• Megalodon means "big tooth"

• It was one of the biggest predatory animals of all time.

• It is an extinct species of mackerel shark that lived about 23 to 3.6 million years ago.

1. 2% quota for Sportspersons

Why in news –Karnataka will extend 2% job reservation to sportspersons in all government departments.

Key Points –

• Also, 75 sportspersons were selected under the ‘Amrit Kreeda Dattu Yojane’.

• Karnataka has decided to recognise basketball as the state game.
