1. Election of Vice-President

Why in news – NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected India’s 14th Vice-President on August 6, 2022.

Key Points –

• He defeated Opposition candidate Margaret Alva.

• He got 528 out of 725 votes polled. Alva – 182 votes.

• Among the 780-member electorate, 725 votes were polled (92.94% turnout), 15 votes were invalid.

• Dhankhar succeeds M Venkaiah Naidu, whose term ends on August 10.

• 55 MPs did not vote (34 from TMC).

2. Operation Yatri Suraksha

Why in news – Railway Protection Force (RPF) has launched the pan-India operation improve to the security of passengers.

Key Points –

• It is a month-long drive launched against criminals in July 2022 by RPF.

3. Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD)

Why in news – Nearly 3,000 cattle have died in Rajasthan and Gujarat due to LSD in few weeks.

Key Points –

• NDDB has supplied 28 lakh doses of goat pox vaccine bought from a private entity called Hester Biosciences.

About LSD –

• It is caused by Capripoxvirus.

• It is genetically related to the goatpox and sheeppox virus family.

• In September 2020, a strain of the virus was discovered in Maharashtra.

• It is not zoonotic i.e., it does not spread from animals to humans.

4. US Navy Ship (USNS) Charles Drew

Why in news – USNS Charles Drew arrived at Kattupalli shipyard in Chennai for undertaking repairs and allied services.

Key Points –

• This is the first ever repair of a US Navy ship in India.

• US Navy had awarded a contract to the L&T Shipyard for undertaking maintenance of the ship.

• India has six major shipyards with a turnover of nearly USD 2 billion.

1. Cuban Oil Facility on Fire

Why in news – A fire set off by a lightning strike at an oil storage facility raged uncontrolled in the Cuban city of Matanzas.

1. “Badhe Chalo” Movement

Why in news – The movement began under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on August 5, 2022.

Key Points –

• Organized by - Ministry of Culture.

• Aim - To connect with the youth of the nation and to instil a deeper sense of patriotism among them.

• It would feature Flash Dances happening across 75 cities where dancers would perform on a specially created “Youth Anthem”.

1. Akasa Air

Why in news – Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated Akasa Air's first commercial flight on August 7, 2022.

Key Points –

• 1st flight - Mumbai-Ahmedabad route.

• In July 2022, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala backed airline received the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from DGCA.

1. SSLV-D1

Why in news – The newly developed Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) suffered a setback with “data loss” at the terminal stage.

Key Points –

• The satellites were placed in an elliptical orbit and are “no longer usable”.

• It was carrying –

A. Earth Observation Satellite, EOS-02

B. AzaadiSat, made by 750 schoolgirls under SpaceKidz India.

2. Multispectral Maps of Mars

Why in news – NASA released the first piece of the multispectral maps of Mars’ surface public.

Key Points –

• Maps were made by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM).

• The multicoloured map covers 86% of the area of Mars.

• It searches for the residue of minerals, ancient hot springs, thermal vents, lakes, or ponds that may have existed on Mars.

1. 7th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog

Why in news – The meeting was attended by 23 CMs, 3 L-Gs and 2 Administrators and Union Ministers on August 08, 2022 in New Delhi.

Key Points –

• The CMs of Bihar, Telangana, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Mizoram did not attend the meeting.

About Governing Council –

• It is a platform to discuss inter-sectoral, inter-departmental and federal issues.

• It comprises –

A. Prime Minister (Chairman)

B. CM of all the states and UTs with legislature.

C. Lt Governors of other UTs.

1. Exercise “Skylight”

Why in news – Indian Army conducted exercise “Skylight” to test satellite-based systems.

Key Points –

• It was conducted from July 25 to 29.

• 100% of all satellite communication assets in the Indian Army were activated and various operational scenarios were played up.

Why in news – SEBI has constituted a 15-member expert group to boost overseas flows into the country.

Key Points –

• FPI Advisory Committee (FAC) would be chaired by former Chief Economic Adviser KV Subramanian.

Why in news – Nallathamby Kalaiselvi has become the first woman director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). She succeeds Shekhar Mande.

1. Connecting Patna and Bihar Museum

Why in news – The work of connecting Patna museum and Bihar museum with an underground tunnel is going to start soon.

Key Points –

• Approved amount - Rs 375 crores.

• Project duration - 3 years.

• Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been given the task of connecting Patna Museum and Bihar Museum.

2. National Handloom Day

Why in news – Bihar government would soon launch “Chief Minister Integrated Weavers Development Scheme” for the development of the handloom sector.

Key Points –

• Handloom sheets are being used in government hospitals to help weavers.

• Around 7 lakh handloom products worth Rs 24.87 crore have been manufactured so far under the “Santrangi Chadar Yojana”.

• 8th National Handloom Day was celebrated on August 7, 2022.

Why in news – The Bihar State Pollution Control Board found that amount of arsenic did not exceed the desired limit in Patna.

Key Points –

• TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in water ranged from 300 to 400 which is suitable for drinking.

• The pH value of water ranged between 7 and 7.5 which is better.

• The amount of iron was found to be somewhere up to 1.2 or 1.5. (desired - 1).
