1. Pendency of Cases

Why in news - Law Minister Kiren Rijiju gave a written reply in Rajya Sabha about the pendency of cases and women judges serving in various courts.

Key Points –

• 59,57,454 cases were pending in 25 High Courts until July 22, 2022.

• Highest pendency - Allahabad High Court (> 10 lakh), Rajasthan HC (> 6 lakh) and Bombay HC (just under 6 lakh).

• There are 4 women judges in the Supreme Court (sanctioned strength of 34) and 96 women judges in the High Courts (sanctioned strength of 1,108).

2. African Swine Flu

Why in news - New cases of the disease have been reported from Kannur and Wayanad district of Kerala.

Key Points –

About the flu:

• It is a highly contagious and fatal viral disease of domestic pigs.

• It was first detected in Kenya, East Africa, in 1921.

• It only spreads from animals to other animals. (not to human beings).

INTERNATIONAL:

1. Yuan Wang 5

Why in news - A Chinese research vessel, Yuan Wang 5, is headed to Sri Lanka and is expected to dock at the Hambantota port in mid-August.

Key Points –

• India has raised concerns about the visit of the vessel.

• The ship has an aerial reach of more than 750 km i.e., it can snoop upon Kalpakkam, Koodankulam and the atomic research centre within Indian borders.

• In 2019, the Indian navy pushed out a Chinese naval ship Shi Yan 1, that had come into waters close to the Andaman Islands.

2. Zimbabwe Debuts Gold Coin

Why in news - Zimbabwe has launched gold coins to tame inflation.

Key Points –

• Name - Mosi-oa-Tunya.

• Internationally, gold coins are used in countries such as China, South Africa and Australia to hedge against inflation.

1. 5G Spectrum Auction

Why in news - India’s biggest ever auction of telecom spectrum received a record ₹1.5 lakh crore of bids.

Key Points –

• Reliance Jio emerged as the largest spender in the 5G spectrum auction.

• It cornered almost half of all the airwaves sold with bids totalling ₹88,078 crores.

• It is the only one (among 4 applicants) to have acquired spectrum in the premium 700 MHz band.

• Of the 72,098 MHz of spectrum offered across 10 bands, 51,236 MHz, or 71%, was sold.

Why in news - according to the Index, Savitri Jindal is the richest woman in Asia with a net worth of $11.3 billion.

Key Points –

• She replaced Fan Hongwei (net worth of $11.3 billion).

• Savitri Jindal, 72 is India's richest woman and the 10th richest person in the country.

1. President’s Colours

Why in news - Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu presented the President’s Colours to the Tamil Nadu police.

Key Points –

• Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin received the award.

• Tamil Nadu is the only State in the country to have an exclusive Idol Wing, a unit dedicated to investigating cases of theft or loss of cultural artifacts.

1. West Bengal to get 7 new districts

Why in news - The West Bengal Cabinet approved the setting up of 7 new districts in the state.

• Now, total districts – 30 (earlier – 23).

• They would be carved out of 5 existing districts — Murshidabad, Nadia, South and North 24 Parganas and Bankura.

Why in news - This club will be formed in 75,424 schools of the state.

Key Points –

• It will be formed in 66141 elementary and 9283 high schools.

• It will run under the National Avishkar Abhiyan.

2. Free Medical and Engineering Coaching

Why in news – For this the Backward Classes and Most Backward Classes Welfare Department has tied up with many coaching institutes.

Key Points –

• Online classes will be conducted in the Other Backward Classes Girls Residential Higher Secondary Schools located in all 38 districts.

• More than 35,000 girls will be benefitted in one academic session.

• Mukhyamantri Atyant Pichhada Varg Medhavriti Yojana has been increased 10 times in the budget (Rs 105 crores).

3. Drone Control and Command Center

Why in news – A control and command center will be set up at Kumhrar (Patna) to monitor the drone cameras installed in search of liquor.

• At present, alcohol is being monitored with the help of 29 drones.

• The Prohibition, Excise and Registration Department will empanel agencies to install digital locks in tankers or containers carrying spirits, ethanol, molasses within the state.
